SAFIA are my favourite thing causing a stir in Australian music at the moment. It looks like Canberra is catching up to the rest of the country/world in producing global standard talent. Our fair capital may even start setting the pace one day. SAFIA have been crafting some very danceable songs, all eclectic in their electronic appeal. Their latest single “Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues” has (for me) set a new benchmark for pop writing in an electronic context. A patient build with vocalist Ben Woolner-Kirkham’s falsetto gliding to high highs before swooping down into an onslaught of distortion, pulsing through stabs of syncopated excellence. Rarely can two lines of lyrics make a song feel so complete.
Triple J know what’s up, selecting SAFIA for Groovin’ The Moo Canberra 2013 via Triple J Unearthed, their track “Stretched & Faded” introducing their sonic intensity to the national airwaves. Give both tracks a listen below!
